The gnome sees stress

Ugh. Bad news in reno land. Apparently, our house is sitting illegally on our lot, and, in applying for a building permit, our illegal status has been brought to the surface. (By "illegal", I mean our house, built in 1922, predates the bylaws, which were likely created in the 50s.
What does this mean?
Well for one, it means that the city really likes making money for ridiculous processes. And then...
1. we must go to the committee of adjustment (May 18th), and wait 30 days for it to be approved (a rubber stamp, really, but a costly one for us)
2. our renos, which were supposed to start now, will be delayed until June.
3. we've just moved into our rental home - now what?
3. and yes, our little garden gnome has seen a lot of cursing, frustration, bad parenting, phone calling, and tears. Lots.

Let's hope the next post is a bit more chipper. There might be a lot of silence in blogland for a while.
